Travel insurance does not always pay medical providers directly. In many cases, travelers pay for care first and then submit documents for possible reimbursement. This is why paperwork matters.
Before your trip, read your policy carefully. Check whether private doctors, telemedicine, outpatient visits, prescriptions, diagnostic tests and emergency care are covered. Some policies exclude pre-existing conditions or require pre-authorization.
After receiving medical care in Italy, keep every related document: invoice, proof of payment, medical report, prescription, pharmacy receipt, test request and written instructions. Take clear photos or scans as a backup.
During the visit, ask for an official invoice. It should normally show the provider details, date, type of service and amount paid. If medication is prescribed, keep the pharmacy receipt too.
FastDoctors works on a pay-per-service basis and provides an invoice after the consultation, which travelers can submit to their insurer depending on their policy. Reimbursement is never guaranteed by the medical provider, but complete documentation can make the claim process clearer.
For serious or life-threatening symptoms, call 112 immediately. Insurance paperwork can wait.
